Whether this is your first race or your 50th,
it never hurts to have a refresher about event DOs and DON’Ts.

If you are new, congratulations on choosing the Fredericton Marathon as your first race! We are excited to be part of your story and want to do everything possible to make this experience a good one.

Every race is different, so it’s important to check out the details on the event website and social media channels, read information emailed to you by the race organizers and, if you’re not sure or unclear about anything, ask questions.

Here are some general DOs and DON’Ts:

  • DO sign up early to make sure you get a spot or any swag, such as a technical shirt or your name on your race bib.
  • DO check the event website and social media leading up to the event so you don’t miss any last-minute changes.
  • DO find out the dates and times of race kit pickup and make sure to pick up your kit in advance of your race (or have a friend pick it up for you) – we DON’T offer race kit pickup on the Sunday of event weekend.
  • DO figure out where the race starts and finishes ahead of time, so you know where to go on race day and where to tell your friends and family to meet you after you complete your run.
  • DON’T wait until the last minute to get to your race. Make sure you know what time your event begins, then leave lots of time to find parking (if needed) and to go to the bathroom (there will be a line) before the event begins.
  • DO make sure to wear your event bib properly. It needs to be visible to race officials.
  • DON’T block your bib with your arm upon start and end of the race.
  • DO write the name and phone number of a contact person on the back of your race bib, just in case something happens and race officials need to contact them on your behalf.
  • DON’T wear new running shoes or eat unfamiliar food on race day/the night before. Stick to the familiar.
  • DON’T wear noise cancelling headphones – you need to be able to hear race officials along the course.
  • DO trust your training – you’ve prepared for this and you’re ready.
  • DO enjoy the experience – there is nothing like the excitement of your first (or 50th) race!
  • DO thank a volunteer – they put a lot of time and energy into making the Fredericton Marathon a great experience for participants.
  • DO make sure you pick up your medal – you earned it – and check your race results online.
  • DO share your achievement – and if you’re posting to social media, feel free to tag the Fredericton Marathon.
  • DO check out the Fredericton Marathon’s frequently asked questions section on the website if you need more information.
  • DON’T be afraid to ask questions if there is anything you can’t find. Not sure about something? Contact us HERE!

Things to consider before the Event

Find your ‘Why’
(Why I run)

  • Improve fitness
  • Try new activity
  • Socialize
  • Bucket list

While this may change throughout your training, remind yourself that you have a reason to run and keep going.

Think about what you will need

  • Good pair of running shoes
  • Appropriate attire
  • Support from family, friends and/or training resources such as the following programs

Consider these while training

Goal setting

  • Distance
  • Time required to train for distance
  • Finish standing
  • Plan for event (like Fredericton Marathon)

Safety

  • Take your phone
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Be seen – wear reflective gear
  • Know the forecast and ‘feels like’ temperature
  • Dress in layers

Nutrition/Hydration

  • Before a run
  • During a run
  • After a run
  • Learn what works for you and stay hydrated!

Cross training

Incorporating other activities such as weight/functional training, yoga, cycling, etc., will help reduce injury from the repetitive motion of running.

Always remember: One foot in front of the other!
