Volunteers play an important role in the annual Fredericton Marathon. In fact, the event wouldn’t be possible without them.

How to sign up for volunteer opportunities: Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us in 2024. We changed our online volunteer registration to a new platform in 2023 and you can find it HERE.

Once you land on this page, you will need to create a volunteer profile (if you have not done so in 2023) before you can sign up for a role. You will be asked to input your email address, and then directed to the volunteer registration page. Once completed, please return to the above volunteer role signup page to complete your shift signup. If you do not return to this page, you will not be signed up for a shift.

This volunteer profile information is a one-time requirement (unless you change your email), and you won’t be asked to do this in future years. If you volunteered with us in 2023, you’ll just need to enter your email address and proceed to sign up for a shift.

You will be asked for your cell number, which will only be used to:

  • Confirm that you will receive text messages after signing up
  • In case of an emergency and we need to reach all volunteers at the same time

All other communication will take place through email.

You will receive an email confirming your registration as a volunteer (if you are a new volunteer for 2024); and once your shift has been selected, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive an email please check your spam folder, and then contact me and I can confirm registration.

Another new feature is a description of the volunteer roles, so if you’re unsure of what’s involved in a role, you can see what you’re signing up for! You can sign up for more than one role, but only one shift at a time. Don’t be shy, sign up for as many as you’d like!

The roles are as follows:

Race Kit Pickup Roles

Race Site Roles

I will be hosting two online meetings prior to the event on Wednesday May 8 from 7pm – 8pm and 8pm to 9pm to onboard volunteers before they arrive for their shift. This is especially helpful for new volunteers but is also valuable for the folks who have volunteered with us in the past. Please note the date which you’ll receive in your confirmation email and plan to attend. Feedback from volunteers in 2023 found this to be very helpful as it can be quite busy when you arrive for your shift and it’s sometimes difficult to explain the role/requirement onsite.

Hope to have you with us again for the weekend of May 10-12. If you have any questions, feel free to send an email.

Thanks,
Karen Grant

Race Kit Pickup Roles

May 10 & 11: Delta Hotels Fredericton by Marriott, 225 Woodstock Rd
Working from the ballroom at the Delta Fredericton.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Checking in Participants
  2. Check-in Runner (giving participants their t-shirt and race bib)
  3. Maps/Routes Information (answering questions about the course route)
  4. Participants Shirt (T-shirt) Exchanging
  5. Traffic Control (keeping the pickup line moving)

Check-in Participants – Laptop

Role Description:
You will be speaking to each registered participant asking them their name, confirming the event they’ve registered for and then checking them into the event portal. Upon checking in, registered participants receive a bib with a timing chip (which they will need on race day), and a participant t-shirt (if they registered by the registration deadline).

Your role at Kit Pick Up is to cross-check the registration details on the computer and provide the appropriate race kit including a t-shirt to the participant. You’ll need to be ready to communicate, and work as a team in this role! This fast-paced role will require you to be on your feet for most of your shift, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes!

Skills required:
Comfortable using technology. Attention to detail. The room is busy and loud, so being able to speak loudly and clearly in English (French is a bonus) and have good hearing is important. If you require reading glasses, you definitely need to bring these with you as the laptop screens are small.

Check-In Runner

Role Description:
Once the registered participant has been checked in to the event by the volunteer who is using the laptop for checking, you will be told (verbally) the name and event bib number of the participant, to retrieve the event bib. You will need to double-check that the information is correct before giving the bib to the participant, and will need to read the information on the back of the bib for the participant’s shirt size (and if it’s a women’s or men’s shirt as sizing is different) and collect the participant shirt and hand to the participant with the race bib, again confirming that you are giving the correct participant shirt and event bib to the correct participant.

Skills required:
Good hearing. Good communication skills. Ability to read small type. Attention to detail. This fast-paced role will require you to be on your feet for most of your shift, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes!

Map/Route Information

Role Description:
You will be stationed by the route maps and should be ready to answer any inquiry ranging from event start times, event locations, transportation, route terrain, event start times and everything in between. Don’t worry, if you can’t answer a question a member of the event committee will be able to help you out.

You should also familiarize yourself with the routes prior to coming for your shift by checking the 2024 Race Routes tabs on the website.

You will be standing most of your shift so wear comfortable shoes.

Skills required:
Good listening and verbal skills, comfortable speaking to people

Participant Shirt (T-shirt) Exchange

Role Description:
You will be stationed at the extra participant shirt area where participants will go if they would like to exchange their shirt for another size or giving a shirt (if available) to participants who registered after the guaranteed shirt registration deadline.

You will need to keep the extra shirts organized by gender and size to make the exchange go quickly and easily. If there is not a t-shirt available in the size requested then no exchange can be made, as t-shirt sizes are only guaranteed up to a certain registration date.

Skills required:
Listening, organization, attention to detail (shirt sizing detail is small on the shirts)

Traffic Control

Role Description:
You will welcome participants and give them their event bag (which they will be using for race kit drop off at the event) and direct them to the expo and race kit pick up area.

You will also help move people along through the pickup line as needed.

You will be standing during your shift so wear comfortable shoes.
